Formal Public History Activities
2011-2012: Oral History/Archives Project College Historian
Charged by President of Georgia Gwinnett College to collect data regarding the history of the institution for future publication. Investigated creating comprehensive History/Archives/Records Management program for college. Visited US Military Academy in West Point, NY and War College at Carlisle, PA to observe their programs. Visited archives/institutional museum at Kennesaw State University. Submitted comprehensive report to Provost. Submitted successful IRB proposal to begin oral histories.

1994-1997: Archives/Microfilming Project
Southern Mutual Insurance Microfilming Project Manager. Convinced Athens, Georgia, based insurance company to microfilm and make public its antebellum records on slave and other insurance as part of its 150th birthday celebration. Formed project advisory group consisting of personnel from five state and local historical agencies. Inventoried 250,000+ pages of historical documents. Described series. Supervised clerical staff. Appraised records in various physical and electronic media to determine their proper disposition, and recommended disposition schedules. Completed two Georgia State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) grants. Also received funding from insurance company and the South Carolinana Library.
1994-1996: Historic Preservation
Friends of Scull Shoals Industrial History Project. Helped in initial planning to develop an industrial history park in Greene County, Georgia. Provided historical data on early industrialists and textile mill.
1993-1994: Historical Document Editing
As an editorial assistant in Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project-Atlanta, provided computer training and software support for the editing of historical papers for publication. Developed and wrote procedure guidelines for database management.
1990: Oral History U.S. Census Bureau, Atlanta.
As Census Enumerator, located and interviewed citizens who failed to complete their census forms.
1987-1989 Historic Preservation/Land Use, City of Little Rock, Arkansas.
As zoning officer, enforced zoning, sign, landscaping and subdivision ordinances. Investigated violations through site inspections, interviews, and document searches. Testified in criminal court in prosecution of violators. Reviewed zoning, parking and landscaping aspects of construction permits. Coordinated with state historic preservation commission. Reviewed sign permit and single-family residential construction applications.
1986-1989: Historic Preservation/Land Use
As homeowner of 1920s craftsman cottage, served on Governor’s Mansion Area Citizen Advisory Committee, Little Rock, AR, to help state agency (Capitol Zoning Commission) determine appropriate zoning, construction, and signage changes in historic district surrounding the Governor’s Mansion.
1985-1986: Archives Project/Grant Writer
Investigated, developed, wrote and administered National Historical Publications and Records Commission consultant grant to explore feasibility of establishing a municipal archives and city-wide records management system for municipal government of Little Rock, Arkansas. Formed project advisory group consisting of personnel from state archives and University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Persuaded City Manager to pursue grant. Hired consultant. Scheduled visits. Surveyed records of all municipal agencies. Wrote financial reports concluding grant.
1984-1987: Archives/Records Management
As Records Administrator for the Public Works Department of Little Rock, Arkansas, created and maintained records system for all construction permit related documentation. Wrote procedure guide for records system. Wrote bid specifications for capital equipment purchases. Member of ARMA.
